Awaiting surgery

Just dropped her off an hour ago at a 4wd specialist shop to do the Eaton Truetrac diff install. They said they can get started on Wednesday, and should have it ready by Friday.

Sick rooster tails here I come!

UPDATE 8/27: I stopped by the shop because I was driving along that way to see what the status was, they have everything apart and the ring installed on the new diff but they’re waiting on shims that were missing from the seal and bearing kit they got for it, should be in tomorrow. T hen they can button her up, put a few miles on and make sure everything is copacetic. They said the ring and pinion were in great condition, with only minimal wear at the expected central contact points of the teeth.

Nice!! I looked into one for my first gen Tundra as it’s a non-TRD model, but they are pricey.

Yeah, the diff I got on sale for about $600, and the shop quoted me around $700 for parts and labor to install it with new seals, bearings and shims so it’ll be around $1300 all-in. Still, if it keeps me from getting stuck just a few times it’ll pay for itself.

Yup, that’s what I’ve seen as well. Another option I considered is an ARB airlocker.

I wish more of these Fords survived without rust.

I went with the TrueTrac because it’s entirely self-contained and automatic in function and has no consumable parts. Don’t need to run an air compressor or lines , don’t need to get out and manually lock it, it acts like an open diff when the surface is grippy (no undue stress when turning tightly, like with clutch based LSDs), and automatically applies 3.5 times more torque to the gripping wheel than is going to the slipping wheel when things get loose.

The only tricky part is that if I have a wheel up in the air or on a super-slick surface like ice, where there is no traction, then the slipping wheel has zero torque applied to it. 3.5 times zero is still zero, so it doesn’t work completely automatically in that situation. However, a light application of the brakes will put some resistance on that wheel and thus allow torque to transfer to the gripping wheel. Cool hack I learned about years ago which actually works on the Toyota FJ Cruiser’s torsen diffs as well as the H1 Hummer.

Yeah they’re very prone to it. Mine stays parked from December through mid March to avoid road salt, it lived most of its life in North Carolina and I’m not about to let the rust belt have its way with her.

Just a ho-hum 5.8l/351W and E4OD automatic. Basic contractor truck, this.

Hey, at least it’ll be reliable!

Has been so far, I’ve had it for almost six years. A few odds & ends, replaced the throttle position sensor a couple of times, put in a new water pump and thermostat, replaced the windshield, replaced front brakes and wheel bearings. Never left me stranded though.

I love the Trutrac I had put in the Ranger. So much better in the winter. I can power out of hard corners and even drift on dry pavement if I try hard enough. The only problem besides the cost, is that it doesn't play nice with the electronic traction control, not like that will cause you problems.
